Senior Breakaway Herald

1 - Hey Hey

- from Grumbleface and Slop

Ladies and gentlemen, girls and grubs, welcome to our third ever Puppet Breakaway Herald Magazine.

Since we talked last time, there has been much happening. We know the dates for next year’s camps – so book them in your diary. We have also organised a mid-year get together – so we can all see our camp friends again.

In this issue of the Senior Breakaway Herald, we have an interview with Tall Paul and an interview with Kylie. Kylie has been a camper at Senior Breakaway for many years and next year will be a leader at Junior Breakaway Camp. Go Kylie J !

The Phantom Menace has hit our screens and everyone is queuing up to watch the latest Star Wars prequel. Andrew tells us a bit about this phenomenon (he is so old he remembers when the original Star Wars was released - WOW).

SO many people have visited the web page that we advertised last time. We hope you have enjoyed it. If you want a good laugh, check out the Guestbook. There have been lots of entries by lots of you about each other. The chat room is open twice a week (Mondays and Fridays at 6:00pm). Just to remind you, the web address is: - http://www.breakawaycamp.org.au Hope you like it.

Slop and I got a letter from anonymous with some great ideas for the next Breakaway camp. It says, "I seriously and honestly think there should be a winter camp 'coz everyone misses everyone too much!" Another person wrote, "I think we should have a winter camp. I was talking to heaps of people from camp and they all said that they really missed camp - a lot. They missed the campers, the leaders, the puppets, the games, and everything about camp. Well it's probably impossible to organise a winter camp, this soon, but maybe in the winter holidays, we should all go out sometime, then we can get a chance to catch up with all our friends."

Well we can’t put together a Winter Camp but we can put together a REUNION. So you are all invited to the Breakaway Camp Reunion at the Homebush Olympic Aquatic Centre on 24 July 1999 at around 11:00am. You can leave whenever you want. The reunion is for both Senior and Junior Breakaway Camp. We will have lunch in the Aquatic Centre (the Centre has a shop but it is pretty expensive – you might do better to BYO). We would like you to bring your parents with you too and we will make a family day of it. The Aquatic Centre is where they will be holding the Olympics next year. There are two Olympic Heated Indoor Pools, a Water Slide, a Whirlpool, you can go on a tour of the Centre as well. Cost is $4.50 Adults, $3.50 Kids (4-15yrs plus anyone with a student card) or $13.50 families. If you are keen to come, please call Luke Reurich on 0248864325 to let us know.

See ya’s later and God Bless,

Grumble and Slop.

2 - Grumble Saw Tall Paul and Asked Him These Questions…

Grumble: TP, What do you do for a Job?

TP: I am a Uni student.

Grumble: Oh - so what does a Uni student do during the day?

TP: Sleep in when I’m not rowing. I also like to socialise with my friends, e-mail lots of people, watch the world cup cricket and somewhere in between all of that, I do a bit of Uni work.

Grumble: Rowing?

TP: Yes, I compete in the double sculls for my University Rowing Team.

Grumble: Wow. Have you ever fallen out?

TP: Umm, next question…

Grumble: If you could be a character in any movie - who would you want to be?

TP: I'm sure it will change once I see the new Star Wars but I’d probably have to say Tommy Lee Jones because he can do anything with black on.

Slop: How tall are you?

Grumble: Slop – That’s rude. You can’t ask Paul that.

Slop: Why Not? I only want to know why everyone calls him Tall Paul. Besides, my neck is hurting. Sit down Paul.

TP: OK

Slop: Thanks.

Grumble: What is your favourite Music Group?

TP: Brash's music store Parramatta - there’s a lot to choose from there.

Grumble: You have been coming to camp for a long time. Why do you keep coming?

TP: I love camp because of the friendships I develop. I keep coming back because every camp just gets better.

Grumble: TP, Which church do you go to?

TP: I go to Beecroft Uniting Church in Sydney. I am involved in leading the Friday and Sunday Youth groups. I go to a bible study and I am a part of a committee that organises social outings

Grumble: Do you remember when you became a Christian?

Slop: Hang on. I still can’t see you properly. Kneel down Paul.

TP: OK.

Slop: Thanks.

TP: I grew up in a Christian family. But I really became a Christian at a camp when I was in year 9 at school. It was an ISCF camp. The whole weekend is very clear in my mind and I will never forget it.

Grumble: Why did you do it?

TP: I became a Christian because I could see how Christ worked in so many lives and I wanted to really know and learn more about him and be guaranteed of eternal life.

Grumble: Cool – So TP…

Slop: Hang On. I still can’t see you up there. Pick me up Paul.

TP: OK

Slop: That’s better.

Grumble: (Groan!) Is there anything else you would like to say?

TP: I'll be back in January 2000, for 2 weeks only.

Grumble: Thanks TP.

Slop: Grumble – You should come up here too. You can see so much. I think I like being big. Wait, Paul – Don’t put me down. No STOP!!

3 The SoapBox –

This is where you have your say about whatever you like or ask whatever you like… send your stuff to Andrew.

"This was definitely my best year of camp! It was so fun! I liked the 4WDing. We were in Andrews’ car going up a hill and we nearly rolled it twice! It was so funny, you should of seen his face. Everything else was good... except the mud bowl. It was freezing; I’d never been so cold before in my life! It should be warmer next year, I hope."

Andy

"Well just a quick note to say hi and to thank you for a TOPSSSSSSS camp. Once again THANKS."

4 The Force Is With You…

A Long time Ago in a Galaxy far Away…

It’s Here. Star Wars Episode I. I remember when the first Star Wars came out in the movies. My father took my brother and I, but the theatre was full. So we watched Close Encounters instead. I eventually saw Star Wars and loved it.

Star Wars Episode IV, V, and VI told the story of Luke Skywalker, a young farmboy who became a hero in the struggle to overthrow an evil empire and had to confront one of the Empire's most fearsome henchmen, Darth Vader, who held the terrible secret of his father's fate. The new Star Wars trilogy goes back in time a full generation to tell the story of Anakin Skywalker, the innocent boy who will one day become the dreaded Darth Vader.

In Episode I, Luke Skywalker's father is just a hopeful 9-year-old boy named Anakin, who knows nothing of his eventual fate as a Dark Lord in years to come. This first chapter in the Star Wars saga follows young Anakin Skywalker's journey as he pursues his dreams and confronts his fears in the midst of a galaxy in crisis

Some have said that George Lucas has created a new religion when he created ‘The Force’ and the Jedi Knights. But if he has, he has borrowed a lot of it from Christianity.

How can that be? The Star Wars galaxy was in crisis, struggling under the forces of the Dark Side. The young Luke Skywalker was found to be strong in ‘The Force’. He was tempted by Darth Vader to turn to the ‘Dark Side’. Luke resisted and became the hero of the rebellion, saving the galaxy from the ‘Dark Side’

Similarly, our world is in crisis, struggling under the consequences of sin. And Jesus came as a hero to save the world from our sin. At the beginning of Jesus ministry, he was tempted by Satan (the ‘Dark side’) just like Anakin and Luke Skywalker were. You will find this story in Luke 4:1-13.

What do you think would have happened if Jesus succumbed to Satan’s temptation? Anakin became Darth Vader – one of cinema’s scariest enemies ever. Luckily, Jesus did not succumb to the Dark Side. Instead, he was victorious over Satan. Eventually, Jesus gave up his life so that we could all share the good ‘Force’ with him.

I get excited when I watch ‘Star Wars’ ‘The Matrix’ and ‘Armageddon’ because I like to see good defeat evil and save the world against impossible odds. Sometimes the hero dies like Arnold Schwarzenegger in the ‘Terminator’ movies. Sometimes the hero lives like Bruce Willis in the ‘Die Hard’ series. Sometimes the hero dies and comes back to life like Keanu Reeves in ‘The Matrix.’ And they are all copying the story of Jesus.

I often want these stories of good defeating evil to be real. But only the story of Jesus is real. Not many of us want to believe it. But ask yourself this, what if it wasn’t real? The world is not always a good place – full of wars, suffering, school, and poverty. If it were not real, then God could not care about us. I cannot accept that. I know there is a God who cares about us all. I know it because I see his good works everyday. Have a look and see if you can see something that God is doing in your world today. Some things are not just coincidence but God doing something surprising for us.

The Bible tells us that when we become Christians, God sends the Holy Spirit into our lives. That is the power of God in you. Wow - That is all ‘the Force’ we will ever need. Obi wan Kenobi said, "Use the Force Luke, use the Force." As Christian’s, we can use the power of the Holy Spirit in our lives to talk to God and to get through the tough times and the good times of our lives.

Do you dare to believe that it might be true?

5 – A Poem

What are you searching for
What is your only dream
Who do you wish to be like
Or are you not that keen
God has the answers
He knows us very well
He’s the only one who can save us
Prevent us from going to hell
So if you want to live forever
Make your dreams come true
Ask Christ Jesus into your heart
Thats the major clue

6 - Grumble Met Kylie and Asked Her A Coupla Questions…

Grumble: Kylie, What do you do for a Job?

Kylie: I go to Bulli High School. I am in Year 12.

Sly: Grumble, she’s still at school, fool.

Kylie: But not for long – this is my last year – I hope.

Slop: Grumble did Year 12 twice, didn’t you Grumble?

Grumble: Yes, but you repeated Kindergarten. Now who’s the dumbest? Huh? Kylie – I hear that you like to drive other people’s cars?

Kylie: Ummm? Once when I was shopping I walked out of the shop to go to my car where my Mum and Nan were waiting. But when I got in the car it wasn't my Mum or Nan, it was the wrong car. I jumped out so fast. It was soooo embarrassing! How did you know about that?

Grumble: I’m not just a pretty face, you know. Now, Kylie you have to answer these next questions real quick. What is your favourite Music Group?

Kylie: My favourite music group is umm The Wiggles (Only Joking) probably The Offspring and Jewel, I love heaps of music.

Grumble: What is your favourite Movie?

Kylie: Austin powers and The Matrix!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Grumble: What is your favourite Book?

Kylie: I don’t really have a favourite book?

Kylie: That’s Easy – The Breakaway web site, of course.

Slop: WHO????

Grumble: Hmmmm. How long was that?

Slop: 10 seconds – but she got the last question WRONG.

Grumble: OK. Kylie, why do you keep coming back to Breakaway Camp?

Kylie: I keep coming back because all of the people there are great and I love all the activities that we do and learning more about Jesus and the best thing I love about camp is seeing people become Christians.

Grumble: Tell me how you became a Christian?

Kylie: I became a Christian in 1997 at Senior Breakaway Camp. I realised that Christianity was the only way I wanted to live my life and through him I can live my life to the fullest, knowing he will be with me every step of the way.

Grumble: And now you are going to be a leader at next years Junior Camp.

Kylie: Yep.

Grumble: Thanks, Kylie. Is there anything else you would like to say?

Kylie: I would love to see everyone back at camp 2000.
