April ’99 - Volume 1.2

Senior Breakaway Herald

1 - Hey You

- from Grumbleface and Slop

Ladies and gentlemen, girls and grubs, welcome to our second ever Puppet Breakaway Herald Magazine.

Since our last Herald, we have received a lot of letters, e-mails and phone calls. Cool! Some of these messages and photos are in this Herald. We hope you enjoy them. We have also included an interview with Johnny.

Easter is here. It is a great time for holidays, chocolate, bunny’s, shopping, the show and eggs. But there is another reason for Easter. And most of us don’t think much about it. Inside this Herald we will talk a bit about the other reason for Easter.

And now for something different: - A Breakaway Kids Camp Web Page. So now you can go to your school library and pretend to be doing real work while browsing our new web page. Check out this URL (web) address: - http://www.breakawaycamp.org.au Hope you like it.

Easter is a cool time for Slop and I. We have been travelling the state and performing some ‘first ever’ puppet shows. We did a ‘Red Faces’ show with Jeremy in Cooma and we got second place in round one (YAY!). But we were gonged in round two (BOO – Chuck ‘em off!!). Those Cooma people don’t know real talent when they see it (sniff).

Slop and I got a letter from anonymous about last January’s camp. It says, "I really liked Bruce’s Disco. It was really fun. I also liked the Horse Riding, the Wide Game, and just about everything else. I can't wait until next year." Wow – do you think this person could be any more enthusiastic? But we can’t wait either.

We bumped into Carly of Woonona and she said that she had been writing and talking to a heap of people from camp – Cool J We also heard that Cameron of Mittagong has had a bunch of camp friends over these holidays – Excellent J . Its great to keep in touch with everybody.

See ya’s later and God Bless,

Grumble and Slop.

2 - Grumble Phoned Johnny and Asked Him These Questions…

Grumble: Johnny, What Do You Do For a Job?

Johnny: I work as an Electrician. I am an apprentice.

Grumble: An Electrician? Wow – you could hurt yourself playing with electricity and stuff.

Johnny: Not if you are careful… I have only been electrocuted three times on the job… Once I was thrown five metres away from the power point but I was OK.

Grumble: My HERO! What is your Favourite Sport?

Johnny: I love extreme sports – I have been bungee jumping. But I really like extreme SnowBoarding. I love the freedom that these sports give me. I am hoping to go skydiving next month.

Grumble: What else do you like doing?

Johnny: Umm, I like listening to music and playing my drums.

Grumble: What is your favourite band?

Johnny: I haven’t got a single favourite band. I like Aerosmith, Sabotage, Queensryche, Bon Jovi, and of course Def Leppard. My favourite movie is Braveheart – but now I have seen Matrix WOW. My favourite TV show is Fr…

Grumble: OK OK Johnny! What Do You Want to Be When You Grow Up?

Johnny: I want to be famous and playing in my own rock band. At the moment I am also writing the script to my own movie.

Grumble: Really?

Johnny: When I finish my apprenticeship at the end of this year, I am planning to go to Canada. I will go to the Capernwray Bible College in Canada and learn more about God. I will also be able to Snow Board on the weekends. I might stay there afterwards and snow board a bit more.

Grumble: Johnny, What Makes You Come Back To Breakaway Camp each Year?

Johnny: I have been coming to camp since I was little. When I was a kid, I received so much personally and spiritually from the camps. I have grown a lot (You may not think so…)

Grumble: Who am I to talk? – I’m only a puppet.

Johnny: I would like to give a bit back. I would like the kids to have the same experiences as I did.

Grumble: Thanks Johnny. Have you got anything else you would like to say?

Johnny: Did you know that Duff and Sha-La-La (my soft cuddly toys) REALLY like you and Slop?

Slop: Really – How do you know that?

Grumble: We don’t want to know.

Slop: Yes we do…

Johnny: I read a love letter that Sha-La-La wrote to Grumble.

Grumble: Thanks Johnny. Goodbye!

Slop: Grumble? - You didn’t tell me about that?

Grumble: – TURN OFF THE TAPE RECORDER!

3 The SoapBox –

This is where you have your say about whatever you like or ask whatever you like… send you stuff to Andrew.

"To all the guys who liked me,

Sorry, but I'm taken and have been since November 97 with the same guy the whole time. I'm sure you can find someone else other than me!"

Luv Always ??????? (Guess Who).

"To the girls on the 8:00am Jannali to Gymea train, what are your names?"

Ben.

"You know the photos in the last Herald? The pictures are very hard to see. The last photo looks like the middle kid has a huge VietCong hat on, then I figured it was a Gazebo in the background."

Ben.

Hope the pictures turned out better this time. Ed.

"Andrew,

Camp was great this year but then again it always is. I've never been 4WD driving before, but having you as my 4WD driving driver for the first time scared me!

Disco was great and practically everything else even if TeePee and Luke did scare cabin B and C a whole heap! I think Sarah and I had a scream for every day!

I can't wait for next year’s camp! BYE!!"

Nicole.

"When I got back to school I soon found myself wishing life was an everlasting Breakaway Camp! ... I can't wait until next year!"

Iain.

4 The Easter X Files

We are fascinated by stories of beings from other dimensions visiting us. We watch the films and read the books, veg in front of the TV and play video games where we battle hoards of repulsive monsters. It’s exciting, yet completely unbelievable. We know it is never going to happen.

There is another unbelievable story that has excited people for generations. It’s amazing; it’s out of this world and it is true. It makes great promises for our future.

The story I am talking about is the story of Easter and Jesus’ resurrection from the dead. The story of Easter is truly out of this world – off the planet. It is a new thing. It is about a new world, not this old one.

Jesus, so far, is the world’s only example of a resurrection so far. And his resurrection gives us a glimpse of what our life is all about. When Jesus came back to life, he was completely different. Jesus had a new body; he did not come to life again with his old body. Nor was he a disembodied spirit, a ghost or an alien. It was the same Jesus with a new body model.

When his friends met him, they knew who he was. Jesus talked, ate and could be touched by his friends in the same way as before. He was seen alive by more than 500 people after he died. He was still human and yet he was the Son of God.

For six weeks after he came back to life, he showed off the new body fashion for the next world. And Jesus promised that we all have the chance to enjoy the next life’s body fashion.

You can see why Christians get excited about Easter. Jesus was alive with a new body. Death is no longer the end. It is only a transition from the old life to the new life.

Jesus promised this same experience to all of his followers. The new life promises what we have always wanted - eternal youth, a perfect body, the end of suffering and wars, the end of death and sickness, justice for all, and an endless supply of Tim Tams (well not reallyL ).

But Easter is not just about what happens after you die, it is about life now. It means we can live our lives joyfully expecting what is to come. Sure, this life will have its suffering and tough times, but it is nothing compared to what is to come. Jesus resurrection puts our life in perspective.

This Easter lots of people we know will eat chocolate, talk about Easter bunnies, go to the show, have a holiday, and never know what they are missing. The answer to their dreams lies in the story of Easter, and yet they continue to live without hope in the world.

God offers a future that is greater than our wildest dreams. We need to accept the reality of Jesus’ death and resurrection and believe God’s promise that we will also be resurrected. If we believe it, our lives will never be the same again.

Do you dare to believe that it might be true?

Thanx to Stephen Baxter and Alive, April 1999
